Gilmer Man Given Year Sentence GILMER A 37-year-old Gilmer man has been sentenced to nine years in Texas Department of Cor-, rections after pleading guilty to burglary, the assistant Upshur County district attorney said. Five Killed On State Roads By The Associated Press Five people, including an infant girl killed near San Marcos, have died on Texas highways during the Fourth of July holiday weekend, authorities said Friday night. The Department of Public Safety has estimated that 40 people will die on Texas roads over the holiday weekend.
The death count began Thursday at 6 p.m. and continues through midnight Sunday. The infant girl was killed and seven others were injured when their vehicle rolled over on State Highway 21' near San Marcos Friday afternoon, DPS spokesman David Wells said. Suzette Franco, 2, of Irving, was thrown from her mother's lap and out of the vehicle in the accident. A Los Fresnos man died from head injuries he received after falling from the bed of a moving pickup Friday morning.
Rene Vasquez, 22, died about an hour after the accident in Los Fresnos. Jennifer L. Richey, 17, of Adkins died at about 2:30 a.m. after an accident less than a mile west of La Vernia, that left three others injured, Wells said. In an accident Thursday night, Salvador Anthony Rodriguez, 8, of Harlingen was killed when he was struck by a car while crossing a frontage road in Harlingen, Wells said.

Marvin Church Hosts Discussions A five-week "'Lifestyles In Transition" discussion group will meet in and August at Tyler's Marvin United Methodist Church, 300 W. Erwin, said July Randy Hageman, minister to singles at the church. John Hopkins, a counselor on the staff of Marvin church, will lead the discussion group at 7:30 p.m.
on Wednesdays, beginning July 8. Sessions will be held in the Genesis Class room in the church's Family Ministries Center through Aug. 5, Hageman said. "I'm Single is the topic for the first session, Hageman said. Attendance is limited, with a $5 registration fee required, Hageman said.
